React Native vs Flutter for your first mobile app: the founder's answer

Founders ask this question as if it were a technical decision. It is mostly a business one.

What they have in common

Both give you iOS and Android from one codebase. Both are fast enough for the apps founders actually build: marketplaces, bookings, subscriptions, social, fitness, internal tools. Neither will be the reason your app succeeds or fails.

Where they differ, for you

Who can maintain it after the first developer. React Native is JavaScript and React, the largest developer pool on earth. When your first developer moves on, the next one is easy to find and can also work on your web app. Flutter uses Dart; capable developers exist, but the pool is a fraction of the size and rarely overlaps with your web team.

Sharing with a web app. If you will ever have a web version, React Native lets the two share validation, API clients and business logic. Flutter's web story exists but is not where most teams put it.

Tooling for non-technical founders. Expo, the React Native toolchain, gives you a build on your phone in minutes and over-the-air updates without a store review for small fixes. That matters when you are iterating weekly.

When Flutter is the right call

If you have a Flutter developer you trust, or the app is heavy on custom animation and pixel-perfect design across both platforms, Flutter is a fine choice. Don't let anyone talk you out of a good team.
